We run a points based "zero-sum" system, which we use a database and webpage to track. 99% of the loot tables from Molten Core and Onyxia are public, so we've collectively gone through the items that can drop and assigned point values to them.  In this system, items are not purchased. This system is based completely on priority.

Example:
Earthfury Belt is worth 60 points
Earthfury Boots is worth 100 points

These values are based upon how much of an upgrade the item is from
the normal (blue) alternatives to Tier1 to Tier2 Epic sets.

I'll run through two examples, the examples should explain themselves
as they go.

Lets say 40 of us zone into a fresh MC instance.

Lucifron dies and drops shaman boots. These are valued at 100 points.
There are 3 shamans in the raid,

Shaman A has 25 points
Shaman B has 0 points (first raid)
Shaman C has -97.5 (won an item last raid)

one of them has been on a few raids w/o looting and has 25 Points (shaman A),
one has zero (shaman B) and one has -97.5(shaman C). The shaman with 25 points (A)
can take or pass, then the shaman at zero points (can take or pass),
then the shaman at -97.5 (can take or pass). If all pass, the item is
disenchanted if BoP or offered to shamans in the guild not on the raid
if BoE. (Whatever shaman has the highest point standing gets offered first)

Say the shaman with 25 (A) points exercises his priority and takes the Earthfury
Boots. He drops to -100 points and everyone in the raid receives 2.5
points (100 points divided by 40 people on the raid). This point gain
includes the person getting the item (shaman A), so really -72.5 is
his new total.

Twenty minutes later, a trash mob dies and drops the 50-point shaman
bracers. As of now the priority is:

Shaman B = 2.5 Points
Shaman A = -72.5 Points
Shaman C = -95 Points

Priority proceeds based on point totals again. If B takes
the bracers then the point totals for those three shamans are now:

Shaman B = -48.75 Points
Shaman A = -71.25 Points
Shaman C = -93.75 Points

Should another shaman item drop with only those three in attendance,
the priority would go B, A, then C.

The points themselves are totally irrelevant. The thing that matters is tracking priority based on relative point totals. Forinstance, before I went to MC, every 60 shaman in my guild had gone to MC and won loot but me, so the first time I went I got shaman loot, as my 0 point total had priority. But, that dropped me to the middle of
the priority list as many of them have been accumulating points all along and I have not while only winning one item (ranking them above me), and several of them have won multiple items (ranking them below me), making my new total the middle negative.

The important thing to realize about this system is that it is
zero-sum. That means that the total of all points in the system, both
positive and negative, is always zero. If you don't get economics
that may seem useless to you, but what it means is that the points
retain the same value over time, as there is no possibility for
inflation.

I STRONGLY encourage anyone who is unsure about the realities of using a
point system, especially a zero-sum system, to read over:

The Point Model we used has the Tier 1 point base listed below.  With a DKP formula we came up with it allows us to scale any item in the game based off the item level on thottbot.

Head = 170
Neck = 70
Shoulder = 140
Back = 70
Chest  = 220
Wrist = 50
Hands = 110
Waist = 60
Legs = 125
Feet = 100
Finger = 60
Trinket = 40
Shield = 140
Offhand = 125
1H Weapon = 125
2H Weapon = 200
Wand = 65
Ranged 100 = 170

DKP = Tier1 + (0.5*(ilvl-66)^2)

Tier1 = The base Tier 1 value listed above

ilvl = The thottbot item level (not the required level)

dkp/hour=((((total possbile points*avg# of drops per kill)/total # of items mob drops))/max amt of raiders for the raid)))*x%))))

x% = which attempt kill number we are on

- first attempts are .5 (if not killed)
- first actual kill is .5 for the hours before the kill hour, the kill hour is 1.0 (double points)
- second kill attempts are .4 until killed
- third kill attempts are .3 until killed
- forth kill attempt is zero (on farm status)

• This is an alternate roll system and is used only when the raid leader chooses.  Over the last 2 years this has been used very very little.  Most raid leaders will just rand 100 across the board.

Based on Guild Contribution (5man-20man groups)

Here's the scale definition: (Note: These rules only apply to Guild groups 20players or less)

This system is only in place to give the veteran players of the guild a slightly better chance on a roll than an initiate. The same goes for Members, Initiate<Members<Veterans. This system is DEFINATELY NOT MANDATORY as most of everyone that is already a member or vet will let someone have an item even without rolling if it's more of an up than for themselves. Members or Vets can choose to use these weighted rolls at anytime and of course can use just the 1-100 rolls as everyone else if they choose (most of the time this happens).

One up per run allowed, if no one else could use an item and it's an up for the player again they may have the second item only under those conditions.

Rank rolling is very passive and is only there for that 1% situation we might run into. Rarely do we use this even.

Here's how it works:

Initiate = (/rand 1-100) (Either a brand new player to the guild or a player with little to no guild
contribution)

Member/Raider = (/rand 16-115) (A player that has consistenty been present for guild events and sometimes helps other
guild members and the guild in general but perhaps doesn't have a lot of time to play each week.)

Veteran/Vet Raider = (/rand 31-130) (A player that contributes everyday to all guild functions possible, helps any guild
member that asks for help, shows leadership skills and a drive to organize events involving the guild, and has
proven this consistent contribution for MANY months of play)

Officers & Guildmaster = (same roll as veteran)

Alts = ***** THIS rank has 1 exception, if a player joins a raid that is an alt but it was the players own free will without a class requirement for the raid then they would roll as (/rand 1-100). The exception is if the Alt is ASKED to come because they are short a required class for the raid (tank/healer) then the Alt may roll at their Main's rank level.
